SPNG in California's Owens Valley: January 11, 1960
In January 1960, I was traveling to Georgia for active US Army officer duty. The first trip night was Lone Pine, CA, to see the SPNG in action. The next day (1-11-1960), I went to Keeler, CA. The daily train had left; I caught up with it at Kearsage, near Independence, CA. I made 32 color 35mm slides plus 2 B&W photos including the diesel powered narrow gauge train. 2 1/2 months later (March 1960) the SPNG quit operating forever. Owenyo became an empty gravel patch in the desert. I first returned 10 years or so later. A lot of equipment was saved in various railroad museums or displays. Also included are scans of 4 average quality commercial slides which I bought in Lone Pine then.
