High Line: Climax to Leadville Operating Steam. April 3, 1962.
In March 1962, I finished my active military service. My wife & I returned to California. On 4-3-1962, we passed through Leadville, CO. Found the C&S "High Line" in operation from Climax, at Fremont Pass (elev. 11,318 ft.), down to Leadville (elev. 10,000 ft.), where it connected with the D&RGW. "High Line" began in 19th century as narrow gauge but standard gauged during WWII for the high volume of molybdenum ore from Climax Mine at top of Fremont Pass. "Moly" was used to harden steel, etc. (needed in wartime). Climax Mine may have been largest source of Moly in North America then. C&S kept this steam engine in service because C&S management was not sure that diesel locomotives could operate at these altitudes. Couple of years after these photos were taken, management saw the light & replaced the steamer with a diesel. A different steamer replaced #641 for a while before diesel decision was made. I have no info about the replacement steamer. -Hart Corbett
