Durango Yard, July 1960
I walked through these D&RGW narrow gauge yards on 7/ 25 and 7/ 28, 1960. Trains were sent north to Silverton; south to Farmington; & double headers east to Chama & Alamosa. Anyone could walk into the yards; no guards, & no permission needed. Almost all structures are gone. Sand house there but unused in 1999, IIRC. Turntable still there & maybe some brick parts of roundhouse walls were left in rebuilt one after its major fire of 2/10/89. Yard tracks mostly removed; new ones to best serve Durango & Silverton NG put in. Old car shops demolished by D&RGW; new one in different place built by D&S. Original depot still there but its appearance/surroundings very different. Included in these pics are double decker stock cars in the vanished yards north of the depot (now parking lots, fast food places, & 4-lane US Highway 550) plus flanger "OD" near turntable.
