He maintained the studio, now complete with a railroad for filming western films and television series. A massive firestorm roared through Newhall’s Placerita Canyon on August 28, 1962, destroying virtually all the structures on the Melody Ranch property. Much of what remained in Gene Autry's collection was sold over the following decades until he finally sold the ranch itself in 1990.
