Freight Cars
1921
Open top cars and flat cars are painted F-1 Black Car Cement between 1 April and 1 October. Paint shops not equipped to handle Black Car Cement painted them freight car red.

1935
"Roman" New York Central System herald introduced in November. From 1935 to March 1944 the herald is white over a black background. The black background is eliminated on 2 March 1944.
1941
All open top and flat cars are painted freight car red.
1955
"Gothic" New York Central System herald introduced in August. It is white with a black background.
1956
New open top and flat cars built after 6 June 1956 are painted F-1 Black Car Cement.
1959
Cigar Band herald is adopted in June.
