On the Pacific Coast Railway tanks operated by the Union Oil Company were painted black with silver ends initially. Repainted to solid black by the 1930s.
On the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad: Tanks were owned independently from the cars they rode on. As a result the tanks carry different numbers than the car. Surviving tank car #187 at the NCNG Railroad Museum in Nevada City is UOCo #917 riding on NCNG flat #187.
